Balancing Work, Kids, and Real Estate — Making the Most of Time Away
As a top-producing Realtor and a proud mom of two young kiddos, I’ve learned (often the hard way!) that balance doesn’t mean everything gets equal time—it means being fully present where you are, when you’re there. Between showings, negotiations, team meetings, school drop-offs, and bedtime stories, it can feel like the to-do list never ends. But one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is how valuable intentional time away can be—for my business, my family, and my own well-being. With the holiday weekends coming up quick here’s how I make the most of my time when I step away from the hustle of real estate:
- Plan to Truly Unplug (Even If It’s Just for a Day)
Vacations don’t have to be long to be meaningful. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a full week off, I plan ahead so I can be fully present with my family. That means setting client expectations early, looping in my team or referral partners, and putting systems in place to handle the “just in case” while I’m out.
Tip: Set up a friendly auto-responder that communicates your return date and who to contact in the meantime. People respect boundaries when they’re communicated clearly and confidently.
- Time Block for Memories
Just like I time block for listing appointments or marketing tasks, I block time for memory-making with my kids. When we’re on vacation, I try to let go of the urge to “just check one thing.” I remind myself that emails can wait, but these years with little ones are flying by.
When I’m present with my family, I come back to my business more energized, creative, and focused.
- Use Your Environment to Recharge
Whether it’s a beach, the mountains, or simply your own backyard, changing your scenery changes your headspace. I use vacation time to find something inspiring, reflect on where my business is going, or dream up new ideas without the usual distractions. Some of my best business ideas have come from early morning walks with my husband or late-night conversations over a glass of wine.
- Accept That Balance Is Seasonal
Some seasons are heavier in business; others are heavier at home. And that’s okay. I try not to aim for a perfect “50/50” split every day. Instead, I think in weeks or months. Did I show up for my clients this week? Did I show up for my kids? It all evens out when you zoom out.
- Teach Your Kids What Passion Looks Like
One thing I’ve realized is that my kids are watching. They see me working hard, solving problems, and helping people. But they also see me closing the laptop, turning off my phone, and jumping in the pool with them. That’s a life lesson too—that you can build something meaningful without sacrificing what matters most.
Final Thoughts
If you’re a parent in real estate (or in any business that never really sleeps), know this: You’re not alone. You’re not falling behind when you take time to rest—you’re investing in your longevity. And you’re teaching your kids what it looks like to work hard, love deeply, and protect what matters.
So take the trip. Soak up the giggles. Shut the laptop. Your business—and your heart—will be better for it.
